Isotonic sports drinks are referred to those drinks which contain similar amount of carbohydrates and electrolytes in comparison to human body. An isotonic drink is easily absorbed and quickly leaves the stomach, to ensure optimal efficiency and comfortable digestion.
Isotonic sports drinks usually contain around 6-8% carbohydrate and so deliver 1.5 to 2x the amount of carbs that most hypotonic drinks do (30g of carb per 500ml serving). This is generally most useful for shorter duration, high intensity exercise where getting carbs in quickly can be more important than warding off dehydration.
It is the preferred choice for most athletes, including middle and long-distance running or those involved in team sports. It is consumed after intense workouts (duration > 1 hour) to replace fluids and energy.
Gatorade is an isotonic sports drink, a flavored noncarbonated, produced by PepsiCo. It is designed to support effective hydration and carbohydrates for replenishing the energy and fluids that your body loses during exercise. Other brand of isotonic sport drinks include Powerade, and Lucozade Sport.
