The name of Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola was invented by Dr John Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta Georgia.

Pemberton’s partner and Yankee bookkeeper, Frank Robinson, suggested the name Coca-Cola for the drink because he thought the two capitals Cs would look good in advertisements. It was based on two important ingredients, coca leaves and kola nuts.

He drew the letters in the same graceful style of print used today. Robinson was very excited about the new product and with very little available money, prompted Coca-Cola well through the use of oilcloth banners newspaper ads, and free sample tickets.

After the Food and Drug Act of June 30, 1906, cocaine was eliminated from manufacturing of the drink.

With elimination of cocaine from the recipe, the company began stressing the abbreviation ‘Coke’ in their advertising and the word ‘Coke’ is now the property of the Coca-Cola Company.

Dr Pemberton’s original formula was intended to be nerve tonic, a stimulant and a headache remedy.

Coca-Cola was incorporated as Coca-Cola Co. in 1888 with Coca-Cola as its trademark.

Beginning with first bottling franchise in Chattanooga in 1899 and a second in Atlanta in 1900, there were 1000 plants authorized to conduct business by 1919.
